African hunt for investment: any chance for success? AgEcon
Dyakov, Ignaty.
During recent two decades the world has witnessed a drastic increase in global FDI inflows. Gradually more and more investment has been directed to the developing countries in the attempt to diversify portfolios and use finance in the most efficient way. Not all developing regions of the world perfectly succeeded in attracting FDI. Large by labor force and territory, abundant in natural resources Sub-Saharan Africa could perform much better in this aspect. This paper once again reviews the opportunities for FDI in Africa and suggests possible ways for authorities of African states to overcome the existing situation.

Determinants and Measurements of Food Insecurity in Nigeria: Some Empirical Policy Guide AgEcon
Amaza, P.S.; Umeh, Joseph Chinedu; Helsen, J.; Adejobi, A.O..
This study aims at identifying and analyzing food security measures in Borno State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was applied on 1,200 households. Cost-of-Calories (COC) method and Logit model are used as analytical techniques for the study. Based on the recommended daily energy levels of 2,250 kcal, food insecurity line (s) for the households is N23, 700.12 or US $176.87 per adult equivalent per year. Over 58% of the sample households are therefore food insecure. Major determinants of this food insecurity factors are, household size, gender, educational level, farm size and type of household farm enterprise. Policy measures directed towards the provision of better family planning should be given adequate attention and priority by the...

Determinants of competition in agro-food trade between Central European Countries and the European Union AgEcon
Bojnec, Stefan; Ferto, Imre.
This paper investigates determinants of competition in agro-food trade between five transition Central European Countries (CEC-5) (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia) and the European Union (EU-15) countries during the preenlargement years 1995-2003. We distinguish between one-way exports and imports, and two-way successful and unsuccessful price and quality competition in agro-food trade between the CEC-5 and the EU-15. The effect of trade balance on trade competition is found more significant than the effect of export-import unit values difference. Natural and human factor endowments increase price competition and reduce unsuccessful quality competition. Higher level of economic development reduces quality competition, whereas the...

Determinants of Temporal Variations in Advertising Effectiveness AgEcon
Chung, Chanjin; Kaiser, Harry M..
This article develops a varying-parameter advertising model which specifies advertising parameters as a function of variables representing advertising strategies and market environments to explain the varying nature of the advertising responses. Unlike prior models, this model allows researchers to examine the sources of change in advertising effectiveness over time. The model is applied to the New York City fluid milk market for the period from January 1986 through June 1995. Results indicate that advertising strategies and market environments play important roles in determining advertising effectiveness. Particularly, demographic factors were more important than economic factors. The results also suggest that when a market is in an unfavorable or...

Differential Earnings of the Agricultural Graduates: New Evidence from the Agribusiness Industry AgEcon
Qenani-Petrela, Eivis; Wolf, Marianne McGarry.
Utilizing an original data set, we use regression analysis to estimate the impact of various factors on the earnings and the gender wage gap of the agribusiness graduates. Findings indicate that factors such as education, experience, gender, job sector, status and specialty, etc., are important factors in determining earnings. In particular, characteristics such as experience through a foreign internship during college, marketing, accounting and finance specialties are associated with a relatively high market value. Despite progress in recent years, results suggest that a 19 % wage gap still exists between men and women due to differences in human capital characteristics, differences in labor force participation behavior and individual lifestyle choices.

Groundwater Entrepreneurs in China: Selling Water to Meet the Demand for Water AgEcon
Zhang, Lijuan; Wang, Jinxia; Huang, Jikun; Rozelle, Scott.
The overall goal of our paper is to better understand the development of groundwater markets in northern China. In particular, we focus on the factors that determine the development of groundwater markets in our attempt to explain their 'breadth' and 'depth.' Based on a survey of 24 randomly sampled villages and 50 randomly sampled tubewells in two provinces (Hebei and Henan Province) in 2001 and a field survey of 68 randomly sampled villages in 4 provinces (Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, and Shaanxi) of northern China in 2004, our results show that groundwater markets in northern China have emerged and are developing rapidly. Our results show that groundwater markets in northern China are informal and localized. The markets have developed in a way in which they...

How do affective health-related and cognitive determinants influence fish consumption? A consumer survey in five European countries AgEcon
Pieniak, Zuzanna; Verbeke, Wim; Scholderer, Joachim; Brunso, Karen; Olsen, Svein Ottar.
This paper focuses on exploring whether and to what extent affective health-related and cognitive determinants have an impact on fish consumption behaviour. Cross-sectional data were collected through the SEAFOODplus pan-European consumer survey (n=4,786) with samples representative for age and region in Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and Poland. Consumers’ belief that eating fish is healthy and their interest in healthy eating positively influence fish consumption behaviour. Subjective knowledge is found to be a more important predictor of fish consumption than objective knowledge. Age and education contribute significantly to explaining fish consumption behaviour. However, the age and education effects on fish consumption frequency are indirect...

Modelling the determinants of wine choice among South Africa’s “Black Diamonds” AgEcon
Ndanga, Leah Z.B.; Louw, Andre; van Rooyen, C.J.; Chikazunga, Davison.
This paper uses a choice based conjoint analysis in an attempt to develop a consumer profile for the new market for black consumers. Although the different statistical packages used variants of the MNL model, the results were significantly similar with no contradictions in their results and the model provided here had the best statistical significance. Despite the models’ imminent statistical insignificance, they suggested valuable notions about black consumers’ wine choice determinants. Age, gender and the choice of favourite red wine may be used to segment the market and the other significant coefficients will affect the marketing and distribution choices to be followed by wine companies.

Participation, compliance and synergies at the farm level between the single payments scheme and farm certification labels AgEcon
Wieck, Christine; Annen, Dominic N..
Most European farmers receive direct payments under the Single Payment Scheme and in addition, are member of farm certification schemes. Incentives to participate in these schemes are manifold: farm requirements often at least partially overlap, farm structure allows rather easy compliance, but also low monitoring intensities, detection rates, or sanctions may contribute to “free ride” on participation. The paper develops a theoretical model that explains farmer’s joint compliance behaviour and determinants of participation and tests the model using individual farm survey data. Evidence from the survey indicates that farmers weigh the relevance of compliance, control, detection and sanctions differently for the Single Payment Scheme and farm certification...

Patterns and determinants of dietary micronutrient deficiencies in rural areas of East Africa AgEcon
Ecker, Olivier; Weinberger, Katinka; Qaim, Matin.
Micronutrient malnutrition is a large public health problem in many developing countries, but its dimensions and determinants are not yet clearly understood, especially with respect to sub- Saharan Africa. Based on 24-hour recall data from rural households in Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania, this study analyzes dietary patterns to provide a comprehensive picture of the risk of micronutrient deficiencies, with particular emphasis on bioavailable vitamin A, iron and zinc intakes. The results confirm that micronutrient deficiencies are widespread and positively correlated with calorie deficiency. Regression analysis suggests that income growth will bring about important nutritional improvements. However, more targeted interventions are needed, especially for...

Rice farmer’s poverty and its determinants: evidence from Dogofiri village of Office du Niger zone in Mali Ciência Rural
Coulibaly,Brahima; Li,Shixiang; Wang,Zhanqi.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to contribute to a better understanding of rice farmer’s poverty of Office du Niger (ON) in Mali at village-level. Data were collected through survey with 110 head family farms in the village of Dogofiri. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Multiple linear regression models were used to analyze the main determinants of poverty. Results indicated that the factors of physical capital and human capital as well as government policy have a significant influence on the poverty of family farms through production, age, family size, education and health support, agricultural credit and water fees. Policies aimed to improve the family farm’s income and boosting rice production to alleviate poverty...

THE DETERMINANTS OF HAPPINESS AMONG RACE GROUPS IN SOUTH AFRICA AgEcon
Ebrahim, Amina.
This paper tests for happiness differences among race groups in South Africa and also investigates the determinants of happiness for each race group. Using data from the 2008 National Income Dynamics Survey, the results indicate that reported happiness differs substantially among race groups, with Blacks being the least happy. The determinants of happiness also differ between race groups. While Whites attached greater importance to physical health, employment status and absolute income matter greatly for Blacks. For Coloureds and Blacks, relative income is an important determinant of happiness, with religious importance significantly contributing to the happiness of Indians/Asians.

Understanding Foreign Direct Investment in the Southern African Development Community: An Analysis Based on Project-Level Data AgEcon
Mhlanga, Nomathemba; Blalock, Garrick; Christy, Ralph D..
This paper uses a uniquely rich project-level dataset to analyze determinants and trends of FDI flows to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. We control for the source of the investment, the sector in which the investment is undertaken, and the investment type in addition to project size. The results indicate market size to have a positive impact on FDI flows under all specifications- a result consistent with earlier studies. Other variables are unstable depending on specification and the subset of the data used. Furthermore, we find no significant differences in factors that drive FDI flows by source country, while greenfield investments are seen to respond more to the growth potential of the market relative to other forms of...
